Background

This is really a 3/4 Meter Jazz Waltz "Swing" rhythm |1 2 a3 | that has been "flattened" into a Straight Time rhythm: |1 2 + 3 | and then doubled and made into 6/8 Meter:  |1    2 + 3   4   5 + 6   |.  The normal Metric primary stress on counts 1 and 4 is maintained to give it a 2-Pulse Feel, but there’s secondary stress on count 3 to initially give it a “Shuffle” Feel (falling into the Pulse on count 4) than contract it by putting another stress on count 5 instead of the expected “Shuffle” Feel on count 6, giving it more of a “Funky” Feel.  You can see this by aligning the “Mother” and “Child” Grooves together into a “master” Groove.

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  | 6/8 Meter
|1    2 +  3 + 4    5 + 6      |
|B    o o O o B    f c  c      | B = loud bass, b = soft bass, O = loud open, o = open, c = clap, f = muted flam

Keep the “Flat” Jazz Waltz in 6/8 Meter rhythm in mind:  6/8 Meter:  |1    2 + 3   4   5 + 6   | with a 2-Pulse Feel on 1 & 4 – even if you’re attempting to create a 3-Pulse Feel counter-rhythm for a Polyrhythmic Feel.

Role 1 "Father" Drum Style-Guidelines:

To bring out the 2-Pulse Feel and add a Pick-up note, I suggest:

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +   | 6/8 Meter
|1                 4               +  | 2-Pulse Feel + Pick-up to end the Phrase
|B                B               b   | B = loud bass, b = soft bass Pick-up

Role 2 Steady Time-Keepers Style-Guidelines:

Metal – using a low-pitched Cowbell to get across the Shuffle-Feel:

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  | 6/8 Meter
|1           3    4           6      | Shuffle-Feel
|m          c    m           c      | m = mouth, c = center

Wood - gives a 3-Pulse Feel (creates a 3:2 Polyrhythm against the instruments stressing a 2-Pulse Feel).

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  | 6/8 Meter
|1          3            5            |3-Pulse Feel

Shakers – helps to get across the standard strong – weak – weak  Pulse-Feel of a Waltz:

|1    2    3     4     5    6     |
|f     l     l      f       l     l      | s = right-foot stomp, l = left-hand

Tambourine - a slight pull rightward makes a little jingle to Set-up the louder pull to the left against hand:

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  | 6/8 Meter
|1    2           4     5           |
|r     l            r      l            | r = pull to right, l = pull to left against hand

Rasp or Guiro – helps to get across the standard strong – weak – weak  Pulse-Feel of a Waltz:

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  | 6/8 Meter
|1    2    3     4     5     6    |
|L    s    s      L     s     s    | L = Long scrape, s = short scrape

Role 3 "Mother" Drums Style-Guidelines:

|1 + 2 +  3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + | 6/8 Meter
|1    2 +  3    4     5          |
|b    o o  o    c      f           | b = bass, o = open, c = clap, f = muted flam
|R    R l  R          lR          | right-handed: R = right, l = left

Role 4 "Child" Drum Style-Guidelines:

This part is designed to Support the “Mother” Drum on the Pulse and Answer it in Dialogue so as to create the “Flat” Jazz Waltz rhythm in 6/8 Meter:

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + | 6/8 Meter
|1           3 + 4    5 + 6    |
|b           o o b    c c c     | b = bass, o = open, c = clap
|r            r  l  r                 | right-handed: r = right, l = left

Role 5 Advanced Time-Keepers Style-Guidelines:

You could give it an African flavor by playing this on a medium-pitched Cowbell or 2 differently pitched bells:

|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  |1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +  5 + 6 +  | 6/8 Meter
|1          3            5    6     |       2          4            6     | 6/8 Afro Clave
|m         m            c    m    |       m         m            c     | m = lower mouth pitch, c = higher center pitch

Role 6 "Master" and Solo Drum Style-Guidelines:

The Quinto “Conga” Drum or Bongas will  be used by the Master Drummer to Call Responses from Soloists and can also be used to improvise w/ the vocals and dancers.  The Calls and Responses could be 1 Bar or more likely 2 Bars long, and usually respect the “Flat” Jazz Waltz rhythm and basic Pulse-Feel of a Waltz (strong-weak-weak).  They could even play triplets and “swung” rhythms to reintroduce the “Triple-Subdivision” feel agains the “Duple-Subdivison” feel to create more Polyrhythmic tension.  They can also “play off” the other Time-Keeping patterns or Dialogue with any of the other Drum parts or Accompaniment players.
