Background Tresillo Cubano is Spanish for “Cuban Triplet”. It is the same as the 1-Bar Clave, the 3-side of the 3-2 Son Clave in 4/4 Meter: |1 + 4 | (3 notes stretched out over a Measure of 4 Beats – sometimes shown as a ½-note Triplet), or in Double-time or 2/4 Meter: |1 a + | (stretched over 2 Beats – sometimes shown as a ¼-note Triplet), or the 3-side of the Afro 6/8 Meter Clave: |1 3 5 | (stretched over 6 Beats – shown as 3 ¼-notes). It is found throughout W. African music (Yeve Sovu, Sikyi), Mozambique, Conga, Reggae, Soca, Calypso, and is the cornerstone of New Orlean’s Conga de Comparsa and Second-line drumming.
