  • The Krakatoa Rhythm Techniques Class will also teach traditional rhythms from around the world that you can add to your "tool kit" for improvising within ANY musical Style - see each Style's "General Drum & Percussion Style-Guidelines" and under every Style, each "Song's Drum & Percussion Style-Guidelines."

7:30 pm - 8:15 pm:  Krakatoa Song-Building Class & Community Band Rehearsal.

See Sample Flash Video Icon ONLINE Video and the Member Pictures & Biographies.

                                    Fee:  only $3 (Accompaniment exempt)

  • ALL skill levels, attentive youth & adults welcome! This is the best time to gain confidence using the basics of the Krakatoa Skill-Set. It's also a great time for the more advanced players to really stretch themselves. Here we add the Accompaniment & Guest Artists of melody, harmony, vocals, and dance to the drums & percussionists to apply the rhythmic drills we've just learned.
  • Primarily, this is where we focus on Song-Building for many music Styles (e.g., Rock, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Funk, Latin, African, Cuban, Caribbean, Brazilian, Irish, Ska, Hip Hop, Techno, Industrial, Greek, and others) and rehearse them for upcoming Shows - though you are NOT required to perform in the Community Band. To learn and develop these abilities, it's recommended that you:

Regularly attend the Krakatoa Rhythm Techniques Class.

Regularly practice to the FREE Flash Video Icon ONLINE Video Lessons (see also Styles for each song's Shows, Community Band Rehearsals, and Private Lessons).

To progress faster, it's highly recommended that you occasionally take Personalized Lessons from the Krakatoa Instructor at a greatly discounted rate (see CoreBeat-Rates).

  • You can still be a part of the Krakatoa Song-Building Class & Community Band Rehearsal and NOT have to perform at the next Show - as long as you are NOT the only player of a key Instrument-Role that this Show depends on (Role 1 “Father” Drum, Role 3 “Mother” Drum, or key Role 2 Steady Time-Keepers).  We'll make sure these key Instrument-Roles are first covered by those who are committed to performing at this Show and then fill in around them with those who are are not committed to doing so or who are not sure.

8:15 pm - 8:30 pm:  Krakatoa Drum Circle.

See Sample Flash Video Icon ONLINE Video.

  • Free-form improvisation - starting & building on ANY Groove based on ANY Style, which ANY person can introduce, and played with ANY Drums & Percussion - encouraging individual Soloing & interactive Call & Response Dialogue between players - even with local Accompaniment & Guest Artist musicians!
  • If we really get grooving, we may go longer, but you can always leave when you need to.

Attendance:

Regular weekly attendance is recommended to best keep pace with your classmates. However, sometimes you can't avoid missing.  We will partially review previous material to reinforce & build upon it, so hopefully you can "catch up" then.

It's highly recommended that you also practice to the general instruction (not specific to a particular Style) at FREE Lessons.

You can also select a song from any of the Styles and practice to it during:

    • Shows
    • Band Rehearsals
    • Private Lessons

Furthemore, you could get together with your classmates to practice. If you fall too far behind, you'll be asked to play simpler Parts you're more confident about - see each Style's songs for suggested Parts for each Role.

When there's more than 1 player per Part (as with Role 1 "Mother" Drums), we may have those who are more confident with their Parts help others.

Equipment & Supplies:

  • The Krakatoa Instructor supplies all the Drums & Percussion, but if you have any, feel free to bring them. However, there will be times when you are called upon to play those provided by the Instructor or other members.
  • Bring your own water bottle - you'll get thirsty and we don't want glasses broken or being spilled on the rugs or equipment.
  • Bring a folder to keep your songs and instructional notes together for your Classes and upcoming Shows. Please, put your name on the folder and every piece of paper in it!
  • If you are a part of the melodic, harmonic, vocal, or dance Accompaniment or are a Guest Artist, you'll also need to bring your own music stand, portable amplifier, cords, guitar pics, microphone, tuner, pedals, or whatever you need to practice & perform. Please don't expect to share other's equipment. At the Show, you may be further amplified by the "house" P.A. system.
  • Bring your own bungie cord or strap if you plan on playing a drum while sitting down. That way you
can properly tilt it away from you while playing - without it falling on the floor! In order to get more sound out of their drum, many people use a small floor stand, prop it up on the soles of their shoes, and/or put a piece of reflective tile under the angled bottom. Also, if you're short and/or have a tall drum, you might want to bring a thick pillow to sit up higher on the chairs to get a better playing angle. It's always good to have these little things packed with your drum so that no matter where you play, you're getting the most out of your drum without injuring yourself.

Class Attire (See also Show Attire):

  • Dress with layers of appropriate clothing. Once you warm-up, you'll want to peel layers off.
  • Please remove all rings, watches, and bracelets when playing the hand-drums. Get rid of the gum - it messes up your counting & singing of the rhythms.

Attentiveness & Respect:

In order for 10-25 people playing loud instruments to have a very productive and enjoyable experience within our classes and rehearsals without going deaf or losing your voice trying to teach over it, everyone will need to please follow these rules:

  • If we are not playing a song, when the Krakatoa Instructor blows his whistle, this is a signal to immediately stop all conversations & playing. He will not attempt to yell over the top of the "cacophonous din" to address the group.
  • When we are playing a song, the whistle signal should immediately call your attention to a change in the song, further signaled by hand gestures (e.g., starting, tempo or dynamic changes, solo cues, and ending).

Common Class Elements:

This consists of the FREE Lessons - Krakatoa Skill-Set and the Instrument Role-Guidelines below.

Krakatoa's Skill-Set:

FREE Flash Video Icon ONLINE Intro Video-3267: This is like the “floor” of a building, the foundation of whatever music Style you choose to create. Every musician can greatly benefit from this, but particularly those that focus on rhythm - especially drums and percussion. This can also (in addition to the Krakatoa Instrument Role-Guideline Packages) be an invaluable supplemental tool for teachers to help their students easily understand the essentials for making music quickly and have a blast doing it! See FREE Lessons - Krakatoa Skill-Set for me details.

Krakatoa's Instrument Role-Guidelines:

FREE Flash Video Icon ONLINE Intro Video-4307: Because all music has rhythm, all instruments can be separated into 1 of 6 categories with their own Instrument Role-Guidelines. The key to playing effectively in a band is to not only stand firmly on the “floor” of the Krakatoa Skill-Set Packages (see above), but also to understand the Role your instrument plays within the band - knowing which one of the interlocking “walls” you are that builds the “house” of music. If you do this, your piece will interconnect with others to create a beautiful musical “puzzle.” This requires watching and listening to key parts of the Groove (exemplified by Role 3 “Mother” Drums) to know how to Support, Embellish, and Dialogue with it. Playing by Role-Guidelines instead of from musical notation or memorization frees you to be more focused on other musicians, the audience, your own body and spirit, the nuances of the music, and other aspects of musicality, musicianship, and showmanship. See FREE Lessons - Instrument Role-Guidelines for me details.

Instrument Style-Guidelines:

However, there’s always slight modifications for the Style of music the song represents. See Styles for the "General Drum & Percussion Style-Guidelines" and "General Accompaniment Style-Guidelines" particular to each Style and then under each Style, the individual "Song's Drum & Percussion Style-Guidelines" and "Song's Accompaniment Style-Guidelines."
